IV Iron Treatment
What Is Iron and What Does It Do?
Iron is an essential element to the human body. Without it, oxygen cannot be carried through the blood stream. Iron also plays a key role in energy metabolism (healthy weight), neurotransmitter production (mental health), the formation of collagen (anti-aging), and optimal immune system function (less sick days!).
Who Receives Intravenous Iron (IV Iron) Supplementation?
Patients who receive IV iron usually do so because they cannot effectively take oral iron. These include the following:
- Women: Blood loss during monthly periods and childbirth can lead to anemia.
- People who have trouble absorbing iron by oral supplementation
- Patients who are bleeding in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract
- Patients who have inflammatory bowel disease and cannot take oral iron because it upsets their GI tract.
- Patients with celiac disease (gluten intolerance).
- People over 65
