April is Autism Awareness month, the time of year that brings to light issues related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

ASD is not an anomaly, and still many people don’t realize how prevalent it is in the human population. In fact, autism is a preserved genetic trait that has been around as long as humans have. ASD can also be caused as a response to immunological or environmental factors (Guevara-Campos).

The genetic inheritance of autism is complicated. There are over 100 gene loci associated with ASD. Therefore, there are many symptoms and gifts that can be associated with this diagnosis, however, it is difficult and inaccurate to generalize how it will manifest in any individual. The tired, yet accurate phrase is: “If you have met one person with autism you have met on person with autism.”

ASD is genetically associated with prodigy, however, those with ASD can experience challenges that are different than their peers without ASD. Those with ASD might have a difficult time with language acquisition. They may encounter a harder time in social settings. They may have digestive, detoxification, and metabolic challenges.

Keep in mind, autism is a spectrum disorder and symptoms range from mild/ undetectable to profound/ affected. Whether a person presents as neurotypical or neurodiverse, similarly, they manage their challenges and gifts in a way that enables them to be the best version of themselves.

A study done by James Adams, et al, showed that when addressing the underlying or co-presenting symptoms of ASD such as:

  • nutritional deficiencies
  • metabolic imbalances (mitochondrial dysfunction)
  • digestive problems

there are positive correlations in symptomatic behaviors as a result. (Adams).

From a naturopathic standpoint here are four things we assess to support an autism diagnosis and use to address underlying factors which might help to alleviate some of the challenges common with ASD:

  1. NUTRITION. We assess overall health and nutritional intake. We identify and eliminate inflammatory foods and additives like MSG and artificial food-dyes and flavorings. We carefully evaluate for nutritional deficiencies, metabolic problems, or challenges metabolizing vitamins and minerals.
  2. GUT HEALTH. “Many autistic children have co-occurring gastrointestinal problems.” (Srikantha) We look at whether or not candida (a gut fungus) is present, screen for dysbiosis and/ or malabsorption, and work to restore the microbiome.
  3. MITOCHONDRIA. “…The key organelle responsible for cellular energy production.” (Nicolson) It is worth a further look at the mitochondria in someone who has been diagnosed with autism; ASD is commonly associated with functional mitochondrial problems which can cause a variety of symptoms. Through nutritional supplementation, symptoms could be alleviated and the mitochondria repaired. (Nicolson)
  4. NERVOUS SYSTEM. Looking at environmental stressors that may activate the nervous system in an uncomfortable way, we can strategize on mind body work to reduce or eliminate those contributing factors.

“Positive results…suggest that a comprehensive nutritional and dietary intervention is effective at improving nutritional status, non-verbal IQ, autism symptoms, and other symptoms in most individuals with ASD. Parents reported that the vitamin/mineral supplements, essential fatty acids, and HGCSF diet were the most beneficial.” (Adams)

Those with ASD have the opportunity to live life in the most whole way possible. With just a few naturopathic interventions, we are able to support them as they live with and through their diagnosis.

Naturopathic medicine is medical practice based on the philosophy that each individual possesses the unique and innate ability to heal itself naturally. Neighborhood Naturopathic uses holistic and natural medicine, proven treatments and alternative therapies to help your body heal.
